This past fall, my husband and I attended a destination wedding in Mexico City, where we got to enjoy a child-free weekend! It was special to reconnect with uninterrupted conversations, sleep in, and eat amazing Mexican food! We spent much of the weekend at the wedding events, but we were able to explore enough to find some great spots to make up a great one-day itinerary! Our trip was mostly focused on leisurely walking around and admiring the architecture and eating. We browsed a few different neighborhoods, and took affordable Ubers – although the distances were not always as short as we’d like.
There are lots of things to do, but here is a list of our favorite things we did.
Visit Zocalo Square, Mexico City

Zocalo is the main square in central Mexico City. Take a morning stroll in Zócalo to admire the Palacio Nacional and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Walk down Calle Madero, a pedestrian street lined with historic buildings and shops. Near the cathedral, there were small stalls selling trinkets and souvenirs. We enjoyed brunch at El Mayor, where I thoroughly enjoyed my Mexican hot chocolate and breakfast enchiladas. The view from the table was a bonus as well! I recommend it as a good brunch spot.
Visit the Frieda Kahlo Museum in Coyacan, Mexico City

The Frida Kahlo Museum, or La Casa Azul, is famous as the birthplace and home of the legendary artist, Frida Kahlo, where she created many of her most iconic works. It houses personal artifacts, artwork, and displays reflecting her connection to Mexican culture and her unique artistic legacy. This is a POPULAR museum, so make sure to book in advance! We made this error, and were not able to enter. It is definitely on my list for next time, because as I peaked through the doors, it looked lovely!
We instead browsed the neighborhood where the museum is located, Coyoacan. We visited the Mercado de Coyoacán. This vibrant market is known for its traditional Mexican food, handicrafts, and colorful stalls. It’s a great place to explore local products, souvenirs, fresh produce, and enjoy authentic Mexican dishes like tacos, tamales, and quesadillas. I ate the tastiest guacamole that I have had!

Browse Roma Norte, Mexico City

The Roma Norte neighborhood is very charming and one of the most popular areas. We visited the Panaderia Rosetta bakery in Roma Norte, which is incredibly tasty! We then went over to the market across the street. I LOVED the shopping in this market. There were several jewelry and clothing options that I genuinely really liked. After shopping and browsing the streets, we went to Taqueria Orinoco – where I had the best tacos of my life. The sauces, lemon, and onion enhanced every bite!

Grab Churros at Churreria El Moro

We ended our evening at a late night dessert at Churreria El Moro, which there are several locations around Mexico City. It is open late at night. Here, you can order a couple of churros with hot chocolate to dip the churros into. The chocolate is a must IMO. You can also add on a coffee or speciality drink. They are tasty and affordable, and I think the calories are worth it :). It is a perfect way to end a day exploring CDMX.
